The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) employs the use of a 37° flare or seat for high pressure jointing to JIC Standards. The seating is by line contact established during fitment.

The JIC female has straight threads and a 37° flare seat and is quite common among American fittings. The 45° flare fittings used for low pressure applications are almost similar, except for the seat angles. Customers are advised to measure seating angles, to avoid interchange, resulting in leakages.

Although this type is not recommended by National Power Fluid Association (NPFA) for use in hydraulics, the same is still popularly used. The Seat takes place by deformation of threads.

These fittings find extensive use in mobile hydraulics and is relatively reliable. The fittings employs a straight thread and a rubber 'o' ring, on the mating component, to provide a leak proof connection.

SAE flange fittings are mainly used for critical applications, (Industrial and Mobile). The flange head is provided with an 'o' ring groove and is held in place, by split or Rectangular Flanges. The selection of the type of Flange is as per the rating. Code 61 Flanges are rated for 3000 PSI (210 bar). These fittings are also available in 45° or 90° tubular bends.
